Explore This Summer at Our Preserves

Get outside and explore this summer at The Little Forks Conservancy’s Averill Preserve and Riverview Natural Area. These free guided hikes are a great opportunities to discover mid-Michigan’s beautiful natural landscape and diverse wildlife. We hope that you will join us for one of these fun hikes:

Meet the Property! • Doug Koop
Go behind the scenes with Executive Director Doug Koop June 20 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and discover The Little Forks Conservancy’s Riverview Natural Area. Meet Doug to explore the Conservancy’s largest land protection project. The 419-acre Riverview Natural Area includes vernal ponds, extensive wetland complexes, mature woods and highly productive farmland. Doug will be your guide on the trail loop from the new parking area as you explore the lush forest. Enjoy the view from the high banks of the Tittabawassee River and you just might see a bald eagle soaring above the river.

Go behind the scenes with Executive Director Doug Koop July 18 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and discover The Little Forks Conservancy’s Averill Preserve. Meet Doug at the Averill Overlook to explore Averill’s lumbering history. Learn about the Conservancy’s efforts to restore this 74-acre preserve. There’s a lot to see at the Averill Preserve!

Cool Critters: Bug Exploration at Averill • Denny Brooks
Insects serve an important role in maintaining our environment. Check out some of the coolest critters that thrive at the Averill Preserve. Join leader Denny Brooks on Saturday, July 28 from 10 a.m. to noon to see what we can catch. We may even spot a few butterflies!

Mushrooms and More • Karen Breternitz
Join Karen Breternitz of Chippewa Nature Center August 22 from 9:30 a.m. to noon as we explore the dense forest of Riverview Natural Area for mushrooms and other fungi. Bring your camera for a slow and easy 1.5 mile hike. We will meet at the parking area on Wheeler Road and caravan to the northern trails.
