David and Anna Spencer , 154 acres
Sherman Township, Gladwin County
When David and Anna Spencer were looking for a place to raise their children, they found their 160 acre Sherman Township home. Thirty-four years later, the Spencers have taken steps to ensure that 154 acres of the land on which they raised their children remains a natural, open space forever.
The conservation easement protects 2,700 feet of frontage on Schoolhouse Lake and 3,400 feet of a tributary of the North Branch of the Cedar River. The property is home to a diverse range of plant and animal life, including a variety of wildflowers, pond lillies, oak, maple and aspen trees and deer, turkey and waterfowl.
The Spencer’s conservation easement is the second completed Cedar River Conservation Easement Project property, which was funded through a grant from the State of Michigan’s Clean Michigan Initiative.
