Celebrating 20 Years of Protection at the Whalen Property

This November, we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of one of Little Forks Conservancy’s conservation easements. In 2005, Scott and Kathryn Whalen permanently protected their 119-acre property in Gladwin, ensuring that its woods, wetlands, and open fields would remain undeveloped for years to come.

At the time, the Whalens wanted to make sure the land stayed the way it was, a quiet refuge for wildlife and a peaceful place to enjoy. Partnering with Little Forks Conservancy, they signed a conservation easement that safeguards the property’s natural character while allowing it to continue being privately owned and cared for.

Two decades later, that decision continues to make a difference. The property’s forests, ponds, wetlands, and fields provide valuable habitat for wildlife like birds, deer, and pollinators. Each year, our staff visits the site to ensure that the landscape remains protected, just as the easement intended.

Beyond protection, the Whalens have embraced hands-on stewardship. They’ve worked to remove invasive plants, plant native trees and wildflowers, and improve habitat for wildlife. Through their care, the land continues to thrive.
We’re grateful to the Whalens for their lasting commitment to conservation and for being part of Little Forks’ growing network of protected lands. Their dedication 20 years ago helped lay the foundation for the land protection work we continue today: keeping our region’s natural spaces healthy, connected, and thriving for the next generation.
